Mushroom extracts

And you are probably wondering why is that? Well let me tell you.

As you probably already know mushrooms have many beneficial components for our bodies. And some of them, like lectins, polysaccharides, phenolics and polyphenolics, terpenoids, ergosterols, and volatile organic compounds are especially beneficial for our skin. They have potent antioxidant as well as anti – inflammatory properties which are frequently used in an effort to address cosmetic concerns such as fine lines, uneven tone, wrinkles and texture.

Nowadays there are already quite a lot of companies that use mushroom extracts in their products. They use them in lotions, creams, serums, tonics, face masks, soaps, lip balms and so on. These products are also known as cosmeceuticals, which means that they are applied topically. As well as those, we can also find products which are ingested orally and are known as nutricosmetic and they have similar perceived benefits.

In their products companies use different types of mushroom species, depending what they want to achieve with it, since different active components in different species vary. Most commonly used mushrooms species in cosmetics are Shiitake, Reishi, Cordyceps and Chaga.

Let’s look at some of the benefits of these different species.

Reishi has anti – inflammatory and wound healing properties, which makes it useful in creams, since it reduces scarring and it also restores elasticity. It acts as a natural sun protection and prevents colour fading. It helps with hydration and boosts collagen production. Reishi also has anti – oxidant properties, which means it protects proteins from oxidation and this antioxidant effect helps preserve the elasticity and firmness of the skin (which helps with softening expression lines, so it has anti – ageing properties too), but also helps prevent dryness and peeling.

Main benefits of using Cordyceps mushroom extract in cosmetic products is that it soothes and re-hydrates dry skin, helps to reduce scarring and restore elasticity to the skin. It softens expression lines, enhances cellular oxygenation and intracellular energy (increase levels of ATP), the skin recovers its tone and reduces the signs of fatigue and premature ageing. It also calms the stinging, itching and peeling of the skin.

Shiitake contains molecules that act as a natural skin brightening agents and they firm up your complexion, improve sun spots and acne scars. It also contains ingredients which are claimed to stimulate immune system, strengthening its ability to fight infection and disease. It also contains compounds which have high water retention capabilities, which makes them useful in moisturisers. This mushroom is also used in products for firmness and elasticity, stronger and more resilient skin.

Chaga has similar benefits as all the other mushrooms, for example it has anti – inflammatory properties which can help sooth irritated skin. It also contains molecules that help rehydrate your skin and in addition is anti – bacterial which make it perfect for any skin at any age.

As you can see all the species have some sort of positive effects on our skin or hair, so it is beneficial to use them in cosmetic products. We are doing some DIY experiments and will share the recipes with you. But if you tried making your own and using our products, please let us know in the comments below.
